Well, I took a stroll down to Bank yesterday for the memorial march and protest against police brutality and tactics. I know little will change there although I suspect a review of ‘kettling’ may come out at some point. There really can be no justification at all for penning people in for 5 hours without access to food, water and sanitary requirements. That smacks of 3 world dictatorship methods.

If you need to do that sort of thing for football fans, that’s fine. Wait until the other fans have been moved on then let the ‘penned’ fans go about their business. The advantages of that are obvious given the nature of some fans, but holding several thousand peaceful protesters in one place for as long as they did on April 1st is just asking for trouble and I firmly believe that the police hold the majority of the blame for a lot of the grief that occurred that day.

Anyway, yesterdays march went quietly – http://twitpic.com/35emr – and the police stayed out of the way mostly, although they made sure we knew they were there – http://twitpic.com/35ekp. One gent from Indymedia said he was stopping the night to guard the memorial because he believed it would get trashed if no-one protected it – http://twitpic.com/35exj. What got me was how the media hogged the main area. I guess this must be normal and I am just not used to the undignified scrum at an event like that. This was my first demo/protest since the British Telecom strike back in 1986. You can hardly consider me an activist can you.

So, back to the hum-drum of painting skirting boards, what a varied life I live.
